Cross-licence agreement leads the way for R&D collaboration

April 2004 -- BT's research, technology and IT operations business, BT Exact, today announced the signing of a wide ranging cross-licence agreement with Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (Samsung), the Korea-based electronics company, that will enable both companies to use each other’s extensive patent portfolio to further develop their range of products and services in the telecommunications market.

A separate transaction, completed at the same time, involved the sale of several of BT's patents on GSM technologies to Samsung. These patents are essential to implementation of the GSM mobile telephony standard in commercial products and services.

Together, the agreements mark the beginning of what is expected to be an ongoing programme of collaborative research and development between the two companies.
